The second exceptional climb out of Penticton (Apex Mountain being the favorite of the two), Carmi Road offers outstanding views of Lake Okanagan as we climb eastward, away from Penticton. While this climb does start in a commercial area, we are out of town and rural within 1.5 kilometers and there are is a nice bike lane with cyclist caution images painted onto the roadway for that distance. We have excellent views down to the Penticton area and the northern end of Lake Okanagan. At the 5 kilometer mark we pass Penticton Motor Speedway (what appears to be a popular dirt track off the beaten path).
While the climb averages “only” 6.1%, it does pitch up to 10-12% briefly in a few spots along the way. We encountered several deer on our climb, a testament to the rural nature of the climb. We do pass some very nice houses towards the upper part of the climb, no doubt due from the high ground we climb to.
Roadway surface and traffic: The roadway is in fair to good condition with some rough spots but not pot holes. While there is no shoulder along this two lane road, traffic is very light and we rate this a very safe climb.
