Silver Star Road Ride Description - PJAMM climbed July 3, 2016

The #4 ranked climb in Canada begins in Vernon, BC and ends just short of the Silver Star Ski Resort (the main Strava segment ends near the resort itself, but this is after a kilometer of descent). The first 6 kilometers / 3.6 miles are in more of a rural residential area while the final two-thirds of the climb are in a very rural setting with some nice views down and across Vernon to Swan Lake.  Vernon is at the eastern end of the mighty Okanagan Lake which stretches 60 miles in length and is home to 6 of Canada’s top bike climbs (Silver Star, Postill Lake Road, Kelowna, Crystal Mountain, Kelowna, Hwy 97C, Peachland, Carmi Avenue, Penticton, and Apex Mountain, Penticton).

The average grade is a healthy 7.1% and there are a few approximate 100 meter or so of double digit grades during the course of the climb. We enter Silver Star Provencial Park at kilometer 13.7.  This is a popular climb for local cyclists and we encountered (well, truthfully . . . were passed pretty quickly) a handful during the course of our early morning climb.

Roadway surface  and traffic:  The roadway surface is excellent and the two lanes of travel are very wide, although there is not much of a shoulder to speak of through the majority of the climb.  Traffic was moderate with many vehicles carrying mountain bikes for use at the Resort.

Note:  Click on “View full route" (top left) which opens the Apex from Silver Star Mountain Rd RideWithGPS page.  Hover over the distance line at the spot you would like to begin a sub-  segment for this climb.  Click your mouse on the start point and drag the vertical graphing line the distance you wish to obtain sub-detail from, then release the  mouse at the end point.  This will give you the following sub-detail for the selected segment in the “Metrics” window top right of the page:  (a) distance, (b) elevation  gained and lost, (c) max grade, (d) average grade (e) that segment's climb category – e.g. Cat 1, HC, etc., and (f) FIETS score for the segment.
